Mackay Book Store Hosts National Launch of ‘Basics of Life’

Collins Booksellers Mackay hosted the national launch of Basics of Life, an anthology of twelve short stories from both established and emerging writers, on Friday May 27th.

Mackay author Sharon Johnston (aka SM Johnston) played a key role in bringing the national launch to her home town. Sharon was proactive and, upon the announcement of the line up of stories and authors for Basics of Life two months before the launch, convinced Ian and Karen, owners of her local Collins book store in Mackay to stock the book and host an author event.

Prior to Growth being selected for Basics of Life, Sharon Johnston was active on fiction writing website InkPop and her novel manuscript Mishca was voted a ‘Top Pick’ on the site.

Sharon’s story Growth has an autobiographical element, based on her experience of the death of her father. Sharon’s mother was proud to attend the launch and see Sharon’s writing published.

Collins Mackay owners Ian and Karen were great hosts. They provided a display table at the front of their book store, drinks and a platter of food, as well as their friendly customer service. They also stock books by a range of authors from the region; from writing group publications and books by self-published books to books by authors from the region with major publishers, such as the recently released Rosalee Station by Mandy Magro from Mareeba near Cairns (whose first author interview was on The Australian Literature Review).

There was a good turn out from local authors and aspiring writers (with Mackay Writers (aka the Mackay – Pioneer Valley Arts Council Writers Group) well represented), Sharon’s family and friends, readers and local shoppers. There were also people from Whitsunday Writers and Artspace Mackay in attendance.

The authors in the Basics of Life anthology are a mix of long-established authors with high profile achievements and awards, such as Sophie Masson, authors published by indie publishers, such as George Ivanoff and JR McRae, and up-and-coming authors making a name for themself with short stories, such as Beau Hillier and Belinda Dorio, who have both since become part of the Melbourne AusLit Writing Team. As with Australian Literature: A Snapshot in 10 Short Stories, the authors in Basics of Life are from big cities, small towns and rural areas.

George Ivanoff, Belinda Dorio and Beau Hillier will be appearing at Book Street Toorak (521 Toorak Rd) in Melbourne 4-5pm June 9th for a panel on using short stories to kickstart a career writing fiction and to sign copies of Basics of Life.
